Skip self-clean right before a holiday
The extreme heat of a self-clean cycle is the leading cause of blown thermal fuses and failed door locks. Clean by hand or run it well ahead of time.
Verify the temperature with a thermometer
An inexpensive oven thermometer tells you whether the sensor has drifted. Most controls can be offset a few degrees to compensate.
Keep burner ports clean
Boil-overs clog the tiny gas ports and cause uneven flames and ignition trouble. A soft brush after cleanup prevents it.
Do not slam the door
Oven doors carry hinges, springs and a glass pack. Slamming breaks hinges and gaskets and can crack inner glass.
Replace a torn door gasket
A worn gasket leaks heat, throws off temperature and makes the oven work harder. It is a quick, inexpensive fix.
Use magnetic cookware on induction
If a magnet does not stick to the pan bottom, the cooktop cannot heat it. Many "not working" calls are cookware.
