Error Codes

GE Oven Error Codes: F3 and Other F-Codes Explained

What GE oven codes F1, F2, F3, F7, F9 and more mean according to GE, the breaker reset GE recommends first, and when a Jacksonville technician is needed.

By Jax Appliance Pros · · 5 min read

GE oven error codes, the F-codes you see on a GE range or wall oven, are fault codes from the electronic oven control. According to GE, F3 usually means the oven temperature sensor needs to be replaced. A breaker reset sometimes clears a code, but if it comes back, GE says a trained technician should diagnose it. GE also says it cannot list every code for every past and present model, so check your owner's manual or GE's fault code page for yours.

Safety first: if you have a gas range and smell gas, do not touch any switches. Leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Switch off the breaker before removing any panel, and never bypass or pry the door lock.

Checks you can do yourself

GE's first step for any F-code is a power reset:

  1. Turn the oven off and write down the code, along with the model and serial number.
  2. Switch off the circuit breaker, or remove the fuse, that powers the range or wall oven.
  3. Leave it off for a minute or two, then turn it back on.
  4. If the code clears, watch the next few bakes. If it comes back, stop using the oven and book service.

GE oven F3 error code

F3 (and F4): oven sensor

The oven sensor is the thin metal rod on the back wall inside the oven. It tells the control how hot the oven is. GE says F3 and F4 both usually mean the sensor needs to be replaced.

  • Do the breaker reset above.
  • If the code returns, stop using the oven and book a repair.

When to call a technician: F3 returns after the reset. We test the sensor and its wiring and connector before replacing anything, because damaged wiring can throw the same code. A sensor is one of the more affordable oven repairs.

Other GE oven F-codes

F1 (and F0, F6, F7): keypanel

GE says these usually mean a problem with the keypanel, the touchpad you press to set the oven, and that many times the keypanel needs to be replaced.

  • Do the breaker reset.

When to call a technician: the code returns after the reset. The keypanel is replaced.

F2 (F20): oven too hot

GE says the oven temperature has exceeded a preset limit for an unknown reason.

  • Turn the oven off and let it cool, then do the breaker reset.
  • If the oven keeps heating with the controls off, leave the breaker off until it is repaired.

When to call a technician: always if F2 returns. A faulty sensor or a relay on the control that sticks on can let the oven run too hot.

F5, F8, FF: electronic control

GE says these usually mean the electronic control needs to be replaced.

  • Do the breaker reset.

When to call a technician: the code comes back. Control boards are among the pricier oven parts, so we confirm the failure with tests before quoting one.

F9 (and FC): door lock circuit

GE says a component has failed somewhere in the door lock circuit, the lock that holds the door shut during self-clean.

  • Do the breaker reset.
  • If the door is stuck locked after self-clean, let the oven cool, then disconnect power for 30 seconds and see if it unlatches, as GE suggests.
  • Never force the door or pry the latch.

When to call a technician: the code or the stuck door persists. The lock motor, a lock switch or the wiring is replaced.

FD: meat probe

GE says either the probe or the receptacle it plugs into may need to be replaced.

  • Do the breaker reset.

When to call a technician: FD returns. We test the probe and the receptacle to see which has failed.

F350: cooling fan

GE says this points to the upper cooling fan circuit or something obstructing the cooling fan.

  • Do the breaker reset.

When to call a technician: the code returns. The fan, its wiring or an obstruction behind the panels needs a technician.

F96, F97, F7X: internal component

GE says an internal component needs to be replaced. Try the breaker reset, and book service if the code comes back.

A message that is not an F-code

LOC DOOR flashing: control lockout

GE says that if LOC DOOR is flashing and you have not selected self-clean, check whether the Control Lockout feature has been turned on. Not every model has it.

  • Check your owner's manual for the pads that turn Control Lockout on and off.
  • Make sure no one has started a self-clean cycle.

When to call a technician: only if the message will not clear once Control Lockout is off.

What usually fails

Most F-code repairs come down to one part: the oven sensor, the keypanel, the door lock assembly or the control board. Sensors and lock parts are straightforward; boards cost more. If your oven also runs cold or will not heat at all, see oven not heating up.

What it costs in Jacksonville

For freestanding ranges and stoves, the diagnostic is 79 and repairs start at 179 plus parts. Built-in wall ovens and double ovens take more time to access, so the diagnostic is 119 and repairs start at 249 plus parts. The diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair, and you get a written flat-rate estimate before any work begins. We carry common parts on the van, so most GE oven repairs are finished on the first visit, and if a part must be ordered, there is no trip charge for the return visit. Every repair carries our 90-day parts-and-labor warranty. See our pricing.

Repair or replace?

F-code repairs are usually single-part fixes, and a wall oven is expensive to replace because it has to fit the cabinet. Repair almost always wins. Our repair-or-replace guide covers the exceptions.
