How to Reset a Dishwasher: Bosch, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, Frigidaire

To reset a dishwasher, switch off its circuit breaker or unplug it for about a minute, then restore the power. That clears a frozen control on almost any brand. Each manufacturer also has a button sequence that cancels the cycle and drains the water, and knowing yours can save a trip to the breaker panel. A reset clears a glitch, not a failed part, so if the same problem or code comes back, the dishwasher needs a repair.

A word on safety. A power reset is safe on any dishwasher. If there is water on the floor around it, switch off the breaker before you touch the dishwasher, and never remove the kick plate or reach under the door with the power on. Many dishwashers are hard-wired with no plug, so the breaker is the only way to cut the power. If yours is not labeled, find it before you need it.

How to reset a dishwasher on any brand

1. Cancel the cycle, if the buttons respond. Use your brand's cancel or reset sequence below, and let the dishwasher finish draining.
2. Cut the power. Unplug the dishwasher, or switch off its breaker if it is hard-wired or the plug is out of reach.
3. Wait. Manufacturers give different times: GE says 30 seconds, Bosch one minute, Whirlpool at least one minute, and Samsung 1 to 5 minutes. Waiting a full minute or more covers most dishwashers.
4. Restore the power. Close the door firmly, choose a cycle and press Start.
5. Test it. Bosch suggests running a short cycle without dishes to make sure an error has cleared.

Before you reset, write down any code on the display, or count the flashing lights. It tells the technician where to look if the problem comes back.

Bosch dishwasher reset

Bosch says to press the Reset button (marked Reset 4 sec. on some models) or the Start button for about 4 seconds. The dishwasher pumps out the remaining water, which takes about a minute, and the cycle is cancelled. Then open the door and press the On/Off button. Whirlpool dishwasher reset

Whirlpool's reset steps:

1. Press Cancel/Drain and let the pump finish draining.
2. Unplug the dishwasher, or switch its breaker off if the plug is out of reach.
3. Wait at least 1 minute.
4. Restore the power, close the door firmly, select a cycle and press Start.

Whirlpool's individual error code pages use a 30-second power cycle instead. For a leak code such as F8E4, Whirlpool says to press Cancel once to silence the alarm and again to clear the code. If a padlock icon is lit, Control Lock is on, and the buttons will not respond until you unlock it as your manual shows; no reset will fix that. GE dishwasher reset

On GE models with a Start/Reset pad, GE says to press Start/Reset and wait 2 minutes. A blinking Start or Start/Reset light means the dishwasher has been reset and is turning off; it blinks for 75 to 90 seconds, depending on the model. For a full reset, GE says to switch off the dishwasher at the circuit breaker or fuse box for 30 seconds, then restore the power. Samsung dishwasher reset

Samsung says to press and hold Start for 3 seconds to change or cancel a cycle, so tap Start briefly when you want to begin one. For a full reset, Samsung says to unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker, wait 1 to 5 minutes for the electrical charge to clear, and then power it back up. Samsung is candid about the limits: a reset clears the error codes in memory, but it does not fix whatever caused them.

Frigidaire dishwasher reset

Frigidaire support pages give several sequences, depending on the model:

• Clear the current cycle: press and hold Cancel for 5 to 10 seconds.
• Clear a PF code: PF means the dishwasher lost power. Press Start/Cancel to clear it and start a new cycle.
• With Delay Start set: pressing Cancel once cancels the delay and the selected cycle starts. A second press cancels the cycle and starts a drain, and a third press cancels the drain and shuts the dishwasher off.
• Power reset: for an i20 code, which means the dishwasher did not drain completely, Frigidaire lists pressing Cancel, turning off the power at the breaker, or unplugging the dishwasher for 3 minutes.

When a reset won't fix it

• The same code comes back. The code points to a condition or a part, such as a blocked drain or a failed pump, and the reset only cleared the memory.
• The panel stays dark after a breaker reset. Power is not reaching the controls. A thermal fuse, the control board or a wiring connection is the usual cause; see dishwasher won't start.
• Water is still in the tub after a cancel and drain. That is a drain problem; start with our dishwasher not draining checklist.
• A leak code returns. Codes such as Whirlpool F8E4 or Bosch E15 mean water has reached the base. A reset may silence the alarm, but the leak is still there; see dishwasher leaking from the bottom.
• It locks up after every storm. Power surges are hard on electronics, and a control board that keeps freezing may be failing.
• The lights are on but nothing starts. Check for a control lock or a delay-start countdown before you assume a fault.

What usually fails when a reset doesn't help

• Control board. Dead or erratic controls, often after a power surge.
• User interface or touchpad. The lights come on, but some buttons do nothing.
• Door latch or switch. The dishwasher acts as if the door is open.
• Drain pump. Drain codes that return, or water left in the tub.
• Water inlet valve. Fill codes that return with the water fully on.
