Refrigerator Not Cooling but Freezer Works? Here Is What Is Wrong

Opening the refrigerator to warm milk while the freezer is still rock solid is confusing, but it is actually good news. It means the sealed system, the expensive part of the refrigerator, is working. The cold is being made; it just is not reaching the fresh-food compartment.

How a refrigerator moves cold

Almost every household refrigerator has a single evaporator coil, and it lives behind the back wall of the freezer. A fan blows air across that coil and pushes some of it through a damper into the fridge section. If the freezer is cold and the fridge is not, something has interrupted that airflow.

The four usual causes

• Defrost system failure. Every 8 to 12 hours the refrigerator runs a defrost heater to melt the frost that forms on the evaporator. If the heater, the defrost thermostat or the control board fails, frost keeps building until the coil becomes a solid block of ice that air cannot pass through. This is the most common cause by far.
• Evaporator fan motor. If the fan that moves air over the coil stops, the freezer still gets cold by contact, but nothing reaches the fridge. You will often notice the refrigerator has gone quiet, or a fan that whines and then stops.
• Damper stuck closed. The damper is a small motorized door between the freezer and the fridge. When it fails closed, cold air never gets through. On many models you can hear it click when you open the door.
• Thermistor or control board. The sensor that tells the control the fridge temperature can drift, so the control thinks the fridge is cold enough and never opens the damper or runs the fan.

How to tell which one you have

Pull out the bottom freezer drawer or shelves and look at the back panel. Heavy frost on the panel, or ice bulging around its edges, points to a defrost failure. Put your ear near the panel with the door closed (press the door switch if needed): no fan noise suggests a failed evaporator fan.

What to do tonight

Move anything perishable into the freezer or a cooler with ice. If you suspect a defrost failure and cannot get a technician until tomorrow, unplug the refrigerator, prop the doors open and put towels down. Twelve to twenty-four hours of thawing will melt the ice and the refrigerator will usually cool normally for a few days. That buys time; it does not fix the failed part, and the ice will return.
